CMMC Practice Requirement:
Manage non-vendor-supported products (e.g., end of life) separately and restrict as necessary to reduce risk.
CMMC Requirement Explanation:
It is inevitable for products such as software and operating system to reach their end of life. At this phase the vendor no longer releases security updates. An example is Windows 7. Because these systems can no longer be patched they are at higher risk of compromise. This risk can avoided by decommissioning the system or ir can be mitigate with additional security controls.
Example CMMC Implementation:
Either decommission or isolate systems that have reached their end of life (no longer supported by the vendor). Example include old operating systems and software applications.
Scenario(s):
- Scenario 1:
Your company uses an old business application that only runs on Windows Server 2003 (no longer supported by Microsoft). This creates risks for your organization, but it is required to support your business operations. To mitigate risk you decide to isolate the system from the rest of your network.
